Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment
Dental health is an important part of your pet’s overall wellbeing. At Springwood Veterinary Clinic, we provide dental assessments and treatment to help prevent pain, infection, and more serious health problems associated with poor oral health. Although teeth can be given a basic examination during consultation, the only way to fully assess the teeth of our patients is under a general anaesthetic. This is both for their safety and ours.
Once anaesthetised we can gently probe around the teeth to check for pockets in the gums (periodontal disease), breaks in the tooth enamel or enamel resorption. Dental x-rays (radiology) is available so we can screen for problems under the gumline and in the jawbones. Once the oral health assessment is performed, treatment can be undertaken. For mild dental disease this is remedied by ultrasonically scaling and polishing the teeth. For more serious issues, that may involve oral surgery and the removal of rotten or broken teeth and stitching the gums over the affected areas.
